Thanksgiving day was at Aunt Jayne's as usual. Here is cousin Beth carving the turkey (with new expertise from her poultry science class in college!)

While we were staying with Tim's parents in Derwood we took a trip to the National Zoo. We have a zoo close to us that we love, but they don't have elephants. Justin has always seemed interested in elephants, so we thought it was time to take him to see some real ones.
Justin enjoyed the prairie dog burrow playground:
This lion put on a good show for us: pacing, drinking, scraping a tree with his claws, and roaring several times.
We were very lucky to have perfect timing (just by chance) to see two orangutans travel on the ropes from the Think Tank building back to the Great Ape House.

1. you have some seriously awesome hair genes in your family, jen. you all have such gorgeous hair.
2. that's kandula's butt in the elephant picture; i *think* that's his mom shanthi to the left of him, but since i can't see her full ear, i can't tell for sure (ambika has lots of pink on her ears, and shanthi doesn't - it's the easiest way to tell them apart)
3. kids LOVE those elephant footprints. Cool fact: They are the real footprints of ambika, the 62-year-old elephant that lives there. They actually measured the circumference of her feet and walked with her to measure her stride. Asian elephants' front feet are round and their back feet are oval, which is a difference you can see in the footprints.
